A Shift That Could Let Google+ Overtake Facebook

Let’s consider if we were to determine how Google+ could establish itself as a realistic threat to Facebook. In just a short period of time Google+ has experienced quite a large amount of success, with the company boasting 25 million users before going to beta. Recent reports have suggested an audience of 40 million users.

Google recently announced Google+ Pages, and it can be argued that if Google seriously wanted to compete with Facebook and beat the social media giant’s 500 million daily users, it needs to try and go places Facebook can never go. One way to do that would be to increase the value of consumer control. It would not only differentiate the platform, but it could prove appealing in contrast to the interruption of Sponsored Stories into conversations. Google+ would offer a world free from the noise that consumers generally wish to avoid, while keeping relevancy to match consumer intentions.

This year Facebook introduced drastic advancements in their walls with ‘Timeline’ and extended the areas for advertisers through Sponsored Stories. Through these moves, Facebook further united its future success with advertisers.

However, not much has been developed to propose that Facebook is suddenly going to improve from how it is today, when it comes to acquiring customers and keeping them loyal. This is the area in which Google has the chance to make its mark.

Google used to avoid taking advertising on any search results pages on purpose. The founders thought it was unsuitable for the user experience. While Facebook carries on keeping brands happy and encouraging the ability to tell stories to an vast audience, the proposition from Google+ is very different for brands in that their opportunities to target and advertise may come from everywhere other than Google+.

By Google+ creating a place less indebted to brand paid media, it might just be the way to attract a lot of users and take on Facebook in the future.
