Google “Like’s” Visual Shopping Comparison Website

Like.com, the shopping comparison website which incorporates visual search technology, has been bought by search giant Google. It has been suggested that the purchase has been made in response to the recent branding of Bing, the Microsoft search engine, as a ‘decision engine’ for shoppers.

“We’re pleased and excited to welcome Like.com to Google, where they’ll work closely with our commerce team,” declared Google spokesman Andrew Pederson. “We’re excited about the technology they’ve built and the domain expertise they’ll bring to Google as we continue to work on building great e-commerce experiences for our users, advertisers and partners.”

“We see joining Google as a way to supersize our vision and supercharge our passion,” added Munjal Shah, Chief Executive of Riya, the startup which launched Like.com. The site will continue to run separately from Google operations though, but it would appear to be a win-win situation for both parties.

Recent comScore ratings may have nudged Google into making the move, as figures for July 2010 show a decline in the search engine market share for Google from 66.2% to 65.8%. This in turn saw Yahoo make a gain from 16.7% to 17.1%, while Bing remained in third at 11%.
