ComScore has reported the extraordinary growth of the global search market in 2009. In December 2009 the worldwide search market generated more than 131 billion searches conducted by people over the age of 15. This equates to 4 billion searches per day, 175 million per hour and 2.9 million per minute. The top five markets for search were the US, China, Japan, UK and Germany.

Like previous years, Google sites topped the rankings in terms of searches followed by Yahoo! Sites and Baidu in third place. Interestingly Microsoft sites experienced the greatest gains among the top five with a growth of 70% on the previous year. The introduction of the new search engine Bing had a massive impact on Microsoft’s search share.

This data shows search has become a comprehensive tool among internet users as well as a means for sites to deliver traffic to their content.
