Over the current year and the previous year, email marketers have been warming up to social media. Social elements such as the use of buttons to connect with brands on Twitter and Facebook in email campaigns are now common place.
Social media and email also go hand-in-hand in another way. They are the top tactics that marketers worldwide are increasing their budgets on this year.
A survey carried out on business executives from around the globe in 2010, found that almost 2/3 of companies would be increasing their spending on email marketing and nearly 60% would be putting more money towards social media marketing. Search was third, with just over 40% of respondents stating that they would spend more in 2011.
There has been an increase in budgets, but email marketers can find themselves facing the tough challenge of having a lack of staff and resources. This is a problem also encountered by social media marketers.
Email and social will carry on getting closer as more marketers integrate the two channels together. Over a quarter of respondents in the same survey stated that they had already implemented a strategy which enabled email and social to work together. Further findings showed that over 40% were planning to make efforts toward integration in 2011. Some respondents were more prepared for this than others. Marketers have begun to be more sophisticated in their approaches as they continue merging the two channels together.
