Canadians Number One In Social Media Usage

Canada can boast of the world’s highest rates of internet and social networking usage. Canadians happily engage in social network activities on a regular basis, frequently at rates higher than users in the US and our clients are seeing this too.

By the end of last year it was estimated that in excess of 15 million internet users in Canada will have been visiting social networking sites on at least a monthly basis. This is an increase of approximately 1.5 million from 2009 and is a figure that is estimated to increase to over 18 million by 2014.

It is thought that the Canadian population watches more YouTube videos than any other in the world and views the most Wikipedia pages per month. Facebook, however is a particular site in which Canadians take the lead. There was a time when the country was close to having the most total users. This number has since decreased, but over half of the nation is still currently on Facebook. It is by far the top social networking site in Canada, as in the US, with Twitter ranking third in terms of its amount of unique monthly visitors.

Almost 60% of internet users make monthly visits to social networks. Social network users are currently at a stage when they are viewing social media as a means for communication, finding out information, making purchases, entertainment and many other options.

As internet users are increasing the time they spend on social networks, now is a good time for brand managers to try out social media campaigns on users as the channel is providing fruitful results compared to other digital solutions and services.
