5 Things Every Website Should Have.

When developing and designing a website there are five fundamental things to remember when building your website?

1. Good Website Navigation

The main navigation should be clear, on every page and always at the top above the main content on the website. The website should also have a top level navigation menu in the footer allowing the users to move quickly around the site without having to scroll up to the top of every page to navigate to another page. If you’re adding side navigation this should only contain subpage navigation.

2. Excellent Typography

We can’t stress how important having excellent typography throughout the website is. Firstly for good Keyword SEO and secondly for clean looking content. If you’re website contains more than three different fonts and lots of text in different colours it’s time to start rethinking about the typography and make changes.

Work out the base colours of your website, for example: if you have a website that has a black background content area, use the colours grey to white for the text. If you have a blue, use white or black for the text. If you use more than one font, you should use one for the titles and subtitles and the other font for the standard content. Linking words on a page should also be clear to the users that visit the website. Links should have an underline when hovered over or should change colour.

3. Contact Details

Your website should also contain the business contact details on every page, whether it’s in the header or the footer of the page. The phone number and email address usually goes in above the main navigation menu and the contact form goes in the footer of the site.

4. Copyright Details

Every site should have the copyright details in the footer of the website, this lets the visitor know that the websites itself and the content and images are protected under the copyright law.

5. Image ALT Tags Should Be Labelled

When inserting images into the website the alt tag should be filled in for two reasons, the first is for search engine optimisation (SEO) and the second is if people with disabilities visit the website, the special equipment they use can help them know that there is an image on the page they are viewing.

We hope this helps give some of the key steps on building a site. If you have a new site on the agenda then please feel free to contact us at Network Intellect and speak to one of our digital specialists.
