5 Tips For Using QR Codes

QR (Quick Response) codes are the latest trend and have only fairly recently been embraced by some very well-known brands in the business. We are now seeing them all over, from bus shelters to billboards and even as tattoos. They offer a unique method of delivering material that allows marketers to connect with consumers and distribute information regarding their products and services like no other method before.

With the explosion in the usage of smartphones, consumers have begun to embrace this new advertising medium. While QR code marketing campaigns can be very effective, marketers do need to be aware of the pitfalls that exist when implementing such campaigns. With this in mind, here are a few tips to keep in mind when setting up your QR code campaigns:

1. Ensure The QR Code Is Easily Readable

This is a common mistake. It is very frustrating for a consumer who is ready to engage with your QR code, only to then discover that their QR reader cannot pick up your complicated code. This is a very likely way of making people lose a positive feel for your brand. If your QR code cannot be easily read at a normal distance, do not launch the campaign.

2. Give Other Options To Non-Smartphone Users

Do not rule out consumers just because they don’t own smartphones. Offer them other options, such as a website address or other information about what you are offering. Do not assume everyone has embraced this trend.

3.  Include A Call To Action

QR codes are about interaction, so make sure you give consumers something to do after scanning the code. You could ask them to provide a review, write a comment, watch a video etc. Without a call to action there is little point to the QR code in the first place.

4. The Size Of The QR Code Is Essential

If a QR code is cropped or sized incorrectly, the consumer will have trouble scanning it. Basic testing before a campaign goes out can help avoid this problem. You should also ensure that the sizing of the QR code is not going to change once it goes to print.

5. Ensure The Website Is Suitable For Mobile Viewing

It is important that the website that you are redirecting the consumer to is not a dead link, for example.  This is not good practice. This is something that can often be neglected. Make sure that the website you are promoting is tailor-made for mobile viewing and it of course works.
