5 SEO Tips For Facebook Pages

In 2010 “Facebook” is thought to have been the most popular search term on Google, having racked up nearly 25 billion search requests. This is a huge number and it is easy to imagine the figure increasing significantly in the future, especially as new generations of users become more comfortable with the idea of using Facebook as a search engine.

Due to Facebook becoming an increasingly significant commercial platform, brands are beginning to direct their users to their pages on the social networking site. It can be very tricky to get Facebook pages to appear in the SERPs, even in the case of the well-known brands.

With this in mind it is beneficial to consider some methods of Facebook page optimisation.

1. Likes

When it comes to social media there is a lot of discussion about influence, but on Facebook popularity is very important. You need to find ways to get extra likes but generally it is important to ensure you have relevant, engaging and regular content.

2. Fill Out “Info” And “About” Sections

These sections are some of the most important places to put your keywords. The majority of your visitors probably won’t read the information page, but it is a good place to put some keyword-heavy text. It is also a good idea to put your brand or a link in the ‘about’ section.

3. Privacy

Occasionally there can be confusion over privacy settings. An example is there are sometimes page owners who accidentally locked their page down. While there are occasions when you only want to display content to your fans, you should also check that anyone can find you easily if they wish to.

4. Multimedia

With regards to images and videos, as a marketer you should always ensure that you optimise here. That being said, it can be very easy to forget to name or tag a Facebook picture correctly. It is important to keep consistent.

5. Events

With the introduction of Places check-ins, events have become very important, but can be difficult to optimise.

Obvious factors such as location or number of attendees don’t seem to have a massive effect, but it is likely that some or all of these will be indexed. Make sure you use important keywords in event titles and try to get as many “attending” replies as possible.

In addition, when done with caution you can directly invite users to events via email. This could be a good way of starting to build a following.

It seems that shorter updates and titles of less than 80 characters are more attractive to users. Ensure you have solid, optimised text across your page.

While there is much discussion about relevance and influence in social media, it is of no doubt that on Facebook, sheer popularity is also of great importance.
