Images have always been a good way of engaging your visitors and keeping their attention. In addition you can achieve high rankings within the search engines for images you have on your site. We need to consider how to optimise images for search engine optimisation.

1. Ensure Images Are Relevant

When choosing pictures for your web page you should use relevant images that support the content you have written. In addition they should relate closely to the keywords you are optimising for. If a user lands on your page and they see a picture, this should quickly help them to understand what the page is about. They are more likely to stay on the site if the text and the image relate to each other.

2. Name Your Image Files Appropriately

Firstly you should look at your keywords that you are targeting. You should use these as file names. For example, if your image is about dancing in Spain, you could name the image along the lines of “spain-dancing.jpg.” It is advisable to use dashes instead of underscores to separate each word as search engines can see the dashes as a space.

Placing the images into a folder containing the descriptive keywords is also a good idea, as this will also help the search engines know what keywords your images are associated with.

3. Bear In Mind The Actual Size of Your Image

Images can be very appealing, particularly if they are bigger. You need to consider the actual size of each image and how much it needs to stand out. You should use images that are large enough for visitors to connect with it. Smaller images do not do this job so successfully.

4. Optimise Image File Size for Faster Load Times

You should ensure images are optimised for the web. You need to optimise the size of the image file for quicker load times. Despite the fact that we are living in a world with plenty of bandwidth, web pages can slowly build because the images on the site were too large.

It is advisable to reduce the dpi of your images formatted for print using an editing program. When you save the image you can adjust your quality settings.

It is not necessary to use the highest quality setting, because the higher the setting the larger the size of the file. Some point between medium to medium high should be fine.
