QR codes, one of the most popular two-dimensional barcodes, that were designed to be read by smartphones, are more useful than standard bar codes due to their ability to store much more data, including URL links, text etc.
During the month of June in 2011, 14 million mobile users in the U.S. scanned QR codes. This figure represents 6.2 percent of the nation’s total mobile audience.
An online survey that was carried out, discovered that the average QR code user was more likely to be male, aged between 18 and 34, and to have a household income of over $100k.
Further research suggested that the majority of codes are scanned from newspapers, magazines, and packaging on products. Findings also showed that scans were most likely to take place at home or in a store.
The technology has been shown to be used frequently in Japan and South Korea, and the United Kingdom is said to be the seventh-largest national consumer of QR codes.
